In a world where millions of children still lack access to basic education, Room to Read stands out as a global leader in literacy and gender equality in education. Since its founding in 2000, this nonprofit has been a beacon of hope for children from underprivileged communities across Asia and Africa.
Room to Read was founded by former Microsoft executive John Wood after a life-changing trip to Nepal. During his visit, he witnessed a rural school where children had no books to read. This experience inspired him to leave the tech world and launch an initiative that would bring books and quality education to children in need.
What started as a small book donation project quickly transformed into a large-scale educational movement. Since then, Room to Read has expanded its operations to 23 countries, reaching over 39 million children globally.
